Background

Independent promoter, Labyrinth Events, has become a key driver in bringing global names to London. We’ve been working together since 2022, hosting multiple festivals at a quintessential 17th-century Bedfordshire estate known as Tofte Manor.

Following the success of these events, the Labyrinth team wanted to collaborate on a bigger project: Labyrinth On The Thames.

This never-before-seen live event series invited guests to enjoy some of the world’s biggest artists at London’s UNESCO World Heritage site, Old Royal Naval College.

Labyrinth on the Thames made history, hosting 10,000 people at the venue for the very first time. Black Coffee also became first-ever DJ to headline the College, a huge moment for the electronic music scene.

Festival-goers were treated to incredible views, with the stage sitting directly in front of the River Thames, against the backdrop of the Canary Wharf skyline. Within the event, guests could enjoy a range of F&B options while wandering the historic site. A highlight included the breathtaking Painted Hall, often described as the “Sistine Chapel of the UK”, which was used as a space for VIP guests to grab a drink and enjoy an elevated view of the stage from the 17^th century balcony.

The series delivered six sold-out shows, with headliners including Black Coffee, Empire of the Sun, Solomun, Fisher, and Anjunadeep. We worked with Labyrinth to deliver all aspects of event production, operations, and health & safety, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

It was a pleasure to work with Labyrinth to bring this game-changing event to life, and we were so pleased to receive positive feedback not just from immediate attendees, but from spectators watching footage across the globe.

Challenge

Bringing a new event to life in a new site: Hosting an event at a new site always comes with added considerations and unknowns. In this case, the venue’s heritage status required extra care and strict adherence to restrictions throughout. At the same time, we remained focused on delivering our client, Labyrinth Events’, vision to create one-of-a-kind experiences in extraordinary places. Achieving this balance required careful planning and consideration throughout.
Operating in a world heritage site: Working in such a protected site created specific challenges, including protecting historic paving stones, ensuring all vehicles were properly escorted when moving onsite, and adhering to strict preservation rules at every stage. We needed to ensure suppliers and contractors were thoroughly briefed in advance and before starting any work, as well as observing during the build to ensure rules were kept to.
Hosting the site’s largest capacity yet: With the venue hosting its largest audience yet, our teams at The Fair and We Are OPS, as well as the venue team, had to adapt. Using previously unused areas revealed new issues, such as weight limits and crowd control, requiring flexibility and new learnings. This required collaboration between us, suppliers and contractor’s team to ensure processes happened safely while keeping the site protected.
Maintaining student and staff access, public access: During both the build and break, the site remained open to the public. Walkways had to be maintained for visitors, while access for staff and students was also essential. During the event days, when public access was restricted, we ensured staff and student movements were uninterrupted. This included fenced walkways, ample signage and security positions.
